Hi Everyone,

I work at the Poughkeepsie Public Library District in Poughkeepsie, New York. I am a reference librarian for adult services and also manage the Borrower Services (circulation) department. I'm interested in helping bring our patrons (and/or soon-to-be-patrons) up to snuff on technology, especially the sometimes reluctant over-50 set. Looking forward to the conference.

Peggy

In my talk today I quoted Scott Bennett, Yale U. Librarian Emeritus, on the importance of designing libraries for learning, not for information delivery. By an odd coincidence Bennett was giving a talk this morning on the same topic at the Massachusetts Library Association annual conference in Springfield. We would like to work with our computing services division to integrate a help desk function into an Information Commons, however, the "Help Desk" staff is much less than helpful and would appear to be totally lacking in patron service skills. We are reluctant to introduce this service on our own, but short of taking over supervision for the current Help Desk we are at a loss as to how to proceed.
